The 781st. Bomb Squdron (H) was part of the 465th Bomb Group (H) of the 55th Bomb Wing of the 15th Air Force.
Based at Pantanella Airfield near Canosa Italy flying B24 "Liberators".
On its 191 missions over Southern Europe it dropped thousands of tons of bombs and shot down 23 enemy aircraft receiving two Distinguished Unit Citations.

Getting there was half the fun. Passing the Rock of Gibraltar on our way to Africa.
When duty calls--
Entering Naples Harbor in 1944. For many of us, this was the first glimpse and reality of WAR!
While remaining dormant for over 50 Years
Mt, Vesuvious decidided to greet the 781st with resounding Roar and Thunder as it blessed us with a thick coat of grey ash.
